A friend of mine bought a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM and is looking for a good extender. 2x is too much: you'd end up with a 600mm f/11 lens that you would need to stop down to at least f/16 to get OK performance. AF would not work, it would be very difficult to handhold w/o shake, and the viewfinder would be very dim for focusing.
Canon EF 70-300 IS II nano USM vs. EF 70-300 L IS USM. I bought this nano USM variant (made march 2021) after 5 years of usage L version. As sharpness goes, I find nano USM lens to be better at a far focusing distance, though L lens seems to be sharper at close-up shots and portraits, L produces generally nicer, richer images, nano USM's ones
